John Reese
Personality:
"Maybe it's up to me to do what the good people can't. Or maybe there are no good people. Only good decisions."
John Reese is a machine.
Not literally, of course, but the way he goes around doing things is so accurate and focused that one has to wonder if every single thing he does is all just programmed into him. He can walk into a room full of drug cartel bosses and then leave calmly after beating them all up in the space of five minutes. He can be in a car crash and then just walk away if nothing happened. He can be tied up, or threatened with a gun, or take a punch to the stomach, and he will somehow get out of the situation with all odds against him. Overall, he's the type of person who no longer has to think or worry about a decision before he reacts to it- all his years of training have ingrained a complete involuntary system into him that he uses with deadly precision towards the people he targets.
Also, John Reese is like a machine because of the way he shows emotion, too. In his past, Reese had to kill many people during his work in the CIA, and the act of showing emotion towards those people was practically torn out of him. And therefore, to this very day, he reacts to the things around him with the utmost calm, never letting his voice stray too far from the level tone he uses to communicate with. Yes, he can show amusement, and annoyance, and even surprise, but anything more than that, like sadness or anger, only come out when he's been pushed to the brink. Another reason why Reese doesn't allow himself to feel about things too much is because he says that what he did "took parts out of him" that he would never be able to replace. You can only kill so many people until the part of you that feels for the people you're killing is snuffed out by the heavy sense of your duty.
But even if John Reese seems like a well-oiled machine who was born and bred to do the violent things he does, inside lies a very tortured soul that he rarely bears to anyone. For while parts of him have been "taken out", as he said, there is still a very heavy conscience behind it all. When his girlfriend and love of his life, Jessica, died of mysterious reasons while he was off abroad on work, Reese blamed himself for it and fell into a deep depression. And probably because of this event and the way he sees himself (as a killer who has made a lot of bad decisions in his life), Reese gained a huge Samaritan complex. If the innocent are being threatened, Reese will do whatever it takes to save those people, even if that means his own life on the line in return. In fact, Reese will even try to protect the innocence of people as well as protecting their lives- for example, in the episode "Cura Te Ipsum", Reese goes out of his way to prevent a doctor from killing a man who drove her sister to depression, all because he believed that the act of her murdering another person "would destroy her" from the inside out. He doesn't want people to become the man he is today, and would rather get the blood on his hands rather than let someone else hold the burden.
John Reese is also hesitant on trusting people, and can come off as paranoid because he doesn't allow himself to get too close to anyone- because all the times he has trusted someone, they have betrayed him or gotten themselves killed. Even when Finch asks him on a search of a room where he would put the things he cares about, Reese merely replies "I don't have any things that I care about". Reese has actively detached himself from society because he's afraid that the people around him will get hurt, and while he may engage in conversation with others and act friendly and nice, one can always tell that he has taken himself out of the equation.
But, overall, Reese cares. He cares about others, even though his training and everything that has been drilled into him seem to go against this. Reese will stop at nothing to protect the people around him, and he will do so until the day he dies, because really, there is nothing else he can live for anymore.
Strengths/Weaknesses:
+ Extremely determined to protect others
+ Can react quickly and precisely in the case of danger
+ Good at fighting and using weapons
+ Knowledgeable about things like how to lockpick, jack a car, other things he learned from his time in the CIA
+ Always willing to help a person in need
+ Able to go through pain/horrible circumstances and still think and make decisions clearly
+ Very observant, able to figure out what a situation is going to become before it happens
- Unemotionally blunt most of the time; sometimes says things that he doesn't realize may not be something the other person wants to hear (like so)
- Would rather act first than sit and wait
- Sometimes makes bad judgements about other people's morals
- Can get manipulated emotionally, as in the case of when he protected the life of a high school English teacher who actually turned out to be a criminal mastermind
- A huge Samaritan complex that can sometimes lead to him making bad decisions because of that obsession to protect others
- Paranoid about trusting others
- Sees himself as a bad person who doesn't deserve much in life

[When the camera turns on, it doesn't show a face. Rather, it shows an Absol pattering around on the ground in front of the man who is holding the Poketech- all you can see of him are his dark black dress shoes and dark pants.]
You know, I never expected anything like this ever to happen to me.
[The voice that can be heard off camera is slightly amused, though incredibly dry.]
I've been through a lot in my life. But waking up in a world where people use creatures with powers to fight every single battle for them isn't one of them.
[The Absol pauses and looks up, flicking its tail back and forth silently.]
[The man huffs.] Makes you think about how normal your life can be when taken out of context, right? Maybe they have to redefine what "normal" is in the dictionary now. Bet that would make a lot of people mad, though.
Because if there's one thing I've learned, it's that people aren't ever used to change.
Third Person Sample:
The man who called himself John Reese stood near the edge of town, leaning on a white picket fence as he watched the sun set, his new companion sitting by him silently. Those who saw him would probably pass him by- there was nothing completely out of ordinary with him. His hair was a dark gray nd not a crazy color like green or purple, his black suit was without nary a speck of dust, though his black shoes were a bit dusty from walking around town. His face was as unreadable as a burned book, though. For while his face betrayed no emotion, his eyes held, perhaps, the slightest glimmer of annoyance. Or maybe sadness. It was hard to tell, because honestly, it was like someone carved his face from stone at that moment.
Honestly, Reese wasn't used to this sort of lifestyle. He wasn't made to go through a quiet journey like this, let alone become close to something like his new Pokemon for a long period of time. In his life, things which he had cared about were either killed or gotten rid of forever. A man like him wasn't supposed to form any attachments- even when he had tried to meet up with Jessica after she had gotten married, his superiors had stepped in again and again and told him that he wasn't allowed. A man, a killer like him would never lead a conventional life. He was a different species from the rest of humankind, an unknown, a person of the shadows.
As Cara, his handler, had told him, he wasn't working in the dark way from other people. He was the dark.
How ironic then, he mused, that the creature, the Pokemon they had given him was the "Dark" type, according to the Pokedex. Did whatever forces that brought him here think the same way? That dark should always be with dark, no matter what world he was in?
He looked over at the Absol, who just stared back in turn. Then, with a hesitant hand, he reached over and gave it a pat on its head, his usual serious face breaking out into a small grin.
"I guess we have to stick together, now, don't we?"
He didn't deserve this, he knew it. But maybe he and this Pokemon could help others the way he did back home. How yet, he wasn't sure of, but Reese knew that he couldn't just sit round and do nothing.
After all, a world with human beings is still a world filled with crimes that hurt innocent people. And as long as Reese lived, protecting innocents would be the only thing he would do.
